Dumber

Remember these two jackasses? The Australian teenagers who robbed a WestStar bank in Vail in 2005. They wore their workplace name tags and didn’t even try to disguise their thick Australian accents. Oh, and it was their own bank!

“That’s what started our investigation,” said FBI Special Agent Craig Bykrit. “The tellers recognized their heights and their accents. Both of them usually came in together to do their banking.”

Flush with $129,500 from the heist, the two geniuses headed to a local jewelry store for some bling.

“They did a little bit of shopping, picked out a few things,” said Ryan Milbern of the Vail Police Department. “The young lady told them what the total would be for the items, at that point they brought out $5 bills to pay for a large, large purchase.”

Good move fellas – you think trying to pay for over $10,000 worth of merchandise with a huge pile of small bills might have raised some red flags?

If that wasn’t dumb enough, the MENSA candidates decided they wanted to travel light during the getaway. So, they dumped some of the cash in a trash can at the Denver International Airport. But not, of course, before they took some souvenir photos in the john of their haul.

“We discovered those pictures on a camera that was in their luggage that they gave us consent to search,” Bykrit said.

“Dumb and Dumber” were sentenced to 60 months and 54 months in the Federal Pen. Bubba must have loved that.

Vail ski resort employees also told police Carroll and Prince (Dumb & Dumber) used their ski passes to board a chair lift within minutes of the robbery.

Investigators soon found mug shots of Carroll and Prince, who had been arrested in January for allegedly shooting out windows with a paintball gun.

A day after the robbery, they drove to Denver International Airportand where they were recognised by a police officer.

The two pleaded guilty and apologised to the two bank tellers who were on duty when they used unloaded BB guns to rob the bank.

After the first unsuccessful attempt to buy jewellery they went to another store and bought a $8000 diamond and a men’s band for about $1000. Nice.

They then went to the airport to buy one-way tickets to Mexico, only to find out the flights had already left for the day. Doh!

The men then went to a nearby hotel, but did not check in because they thought the room rate was too expensive. Ha ha.

The pair of dummies also put at least $US18,000 in cash in the mail, authorities said. Postal officials in San Francisco intercepted $US6000 of it and the rest was recovered after it was delivered to their homes in Australia.

Well done boys. Bet you have some great holiday stories to tell the folks back home. Second thoughts – they should have written a book about it. Hmmm…maybe I should track them down. Make a great movie. You could call it “Dumb & Dumber Do Vail”.
